Cockatoo apistogramma with black ruby barbs?

Hi. I'm thinking of setting up a new tank with a pair of cockatoo cichlids. The tank will be 1 metre long and 40cm wide and 200 litres. I was just wondering if a group of 8 black ruby barbs might be suitable for such a tank. What fish would be compatible with the apistogramma? If not the black ruby ...

Keyholes and Redbreasted Acara

I have the opportunity of getting a second hand 200 litre tank, which is 100cm by 40cm by 55cm. I'm keen to keep a pair of keyhole cichlid in it. I know Red breasted acara have small territories. Would a pair of Red breasted acara also be feasible in a well planted tank? Other tankmates would be 6 b...

Hard water and high nitrate

Hi, I'm hoping when I move house in London to have a new aquarium. The water here is quite hard at 263ppm, but the fish I would like are all hard water species. My main concern is the high nitrate level in the tap water which is 33.9 mean and a max of 43.8. Looks like on a water change I will just b...

Platy babies and Keyhole cichlids

Hi. Thinking of adding some platies to my future aquarium where there are 4 keyhole cichlids. The only draw back to platies is their amazing ability to reproduce. I don't particularly want a tank full of platy fry. Would the keyhole cichlids act as a control for the platy fry or would it be worth ge...

Using Tropica substrate with gravel

Hi, I've been thinking of using an inert substrate (fluorite) on my tank with a smooth pea gravel cap because I have corydoras. I would like to add a 1cm base covering of tropica substrate to get the plants going. I hope to have a lot of plants. Would the base covering of Tropica be necessary with f...

Re: Substrate

I'm a bit confused. Do substrates like tropica soil and fluval stratum reduce hardness as well as pH? Could I not simply use one of these or would that not do. I suppose the hardness would not suit quite a few plants as well? Perhaps I should set up in my relocated 240litre a Tanganyikan setup. I be...

Re: Substrate

Thank you so much for all your help. Have now moved back up to London where the water seems harder. From a long and difficult to understand list it seems the DGH (Hope this is correct) of the water is 14. Nitrate is 32. pH 7.8 I want to keep keyhole cichlid Bolivian Ram Harlequins Honey Gourami Thre...

Substrate

Hi, My tap water pH is about 7.8 pH. The fish I want to keep water parameters are a max of pH7.5 and one is a max of 7. Would it benefit me getting a substrate that reduces pH like fluval stratum or Tropica? I could even have a layer of tropica with sand above. I'm just concerned with an inert subst...

Root feeders or liquid feeder

Hi, For my aquarium which I am planning, I want plants such as Bacopa, anubias, Amazon sword, Cryptocorne, wisteria, penny wort and water sprite. I plan to use root tabs for fertiliser, but also have some water column feeders like the water sprite which will be floating and also possibly ludwigia re...
