Be prepared for diatoms...the reason there are no pictures of Ghost’s kitchen tank is because of all the diatoms everywhere (using media, substrate and plants directly moved from the flex with him!!).

Glad you’ve managed to get to the bottom of it (only just caught up). I had similarly “inert” p @ h gravel with my first betta in 2018. My kH is similar to yours so same difficulties.

If it looks like nitrite is getting stupidly high, do a water change but keep dosing ammonia. It’s just a case of waiting for them to catch up and when they do it’s like overnight magic!
