Annoying tap water, nitrates and phosphates

Hi guys I'm setting up a simple a 200L tank for my dad. Still at planning stage really but thought I'd test his tap water before we bought anything. Phosphates were between 5 and 10 and nitrates were arterial red between 40 and 80ppm straight out the tap! Had a look around and that's 50ppm is the ma...

Re: Substrate Depth & Plant Nutrients

Yeah so I put a root tab next to my vallis, elodea and Amazon swords every couple of months and fertilize the water column for the java ferns, anubias, bucephalandras etc. If you want to avoid plants that need root tabs your best bet will be java ferns and anubias which you should have their roots a...

Re: Pruning Vallisneria

Think you need a sit on mower for them!

From what I've heard you either cut the ones you don't want at the base or cut them at an angle so they still finish at a point that is aesthetically pleasing to you

PS do you use a liquid carbon of some sort? Wondering whether its use will kill my new vallis

Re: Substrate Depth & Plant Nutrients

I'm using seachem fluorite black gravel which is supposedly good at nourishing plants. I'd echo the above sentiments- next time I'll use a soil, and maybe just a top layer of gravel for appearance. What brand of gravel is it? If it's seachem fluorite it will nourish plants longer than soil according...

Re: Exploding fish

I had this on a praecox rainbow I bought recently. Fortunately was still in quarantine tank when it developed. He's still alive and feeding. He went through a period of having what looked like seizures for a couple of seconds but has not done this for a couple of weeks.

Re: Activated carbon in aquarium filters

Will be interested to see your results! I'm currently not using carbon - for reasons mentioned above but also I can use the space it takes up in the canister for something else. Also I'm not sure what effect it has on fertilisers and liquid carbon dosing ( though I add them daily so effect is probab...
