External filter maintenance
#21
Like GL does, Only if power drops, check it.
Git one of them cleaning rods that ar brilliant.
Both OUT/IN gets cleaned.
As for the filters I normaly rince the course filter in Tank water whilst WC.
I don't faff on with the media in the bottom.
One day i'll go for a sump system, some of the canisters are a con! Priced too much and after a few day loses power, if you know what I mean.

I don't think I have done the filters of my big tanks this year..... but then I do have metal mesh on the intakes (to stop shrimp and baby fish being sucked up) so that does increase the time I can leave it between changes.

But ultimately I follow the same rules as most and only do them when the flow slows.

I give the sponges a tankwater rinse every couple of months & leave the media alone.
I used to rinse the media through as well as I thought that was why I got a 'belch' of orange/brown gunk for a second or so when I switched it back on afterwards.
Apparently it's actually because the Fluval ribbed pipes collect that gunk, so I just make sure I've got a bucket under the outflow to collect it.
Planted Fluval 240 Roma
18 Harlequins
12 Amano Shrimp
8 Panda Corydoras
6 Kuhli Loaches
4 Otos
3 Pearl Gouramis
3 Assassin Snails
1 Neon Tetra
