Reliable heater/thermostat
#1
Hi,
I have no doubt this has been raised before but can anyone recommend a reasonably priced and reliable, submersible, heater/thermostat.
To say I am sick of heaters failing after a very short time is an understatement.
Looking forward to seeing your recommendations.
Bill

I just got one from my local fishkeeper, an aqua eco, comes with a guard, going well so far, it wasn’t too badly priced either, about £20
I didn’t have time to wait for a next day delivery, also heard Eheim heaters are really good
Ember Tetras
Pygmy Corys (C Hastatus)
Emerald Eye Rasboras
Apistogramma Hongsloi (Bertha & Basil)
3 Orphaned Mosquito Rasbora
Sulawesi & Nerite Snails
Betta (Kung Fu Bob)
Fancy Goldfish (2 Ronnie’s)
3 very big ghost shrimps
2 honey Gourami

I don't have a favourite brand, as such. Best bit of advice I got was to go for a heater a bit stronger than necessary for my tank (e.g. 150W for 100ltr tank or 200W for 150-180ltr) and that seems to make them last longer.

I live in Scotland, a bit cooler than Essex me thinks.

Well I use a 100w in a 75ltr tank, so should be ok. I have ordered an Eheim so we shall see how that one does.

Eheims are my favourite, only a little more expensive but they seem a lot better built and they don't fail. They're also less sensitive to failing if they become exposed during a water change.
Before you set the temperature by fiddling with the red and blue knobs, read the instructions!

I have 5 juwel aquaheat 300w heaters running two tanks. I always have brand new spares as well just in case of failure. Never needed my spares yet. I find them to be good reliable heaters. They come in various wattages and are about £25 each.

I've got a real mish-mash of heaters, whatever's been available really.
I think all my failed heaters have been my fault for not turning them off during water changes, except the one in the Juwel which was never very good and I swapped for an APS that fitted in the filter box space.
If at first you don't succeed....
...get someone else to do it! Big Grin

Enjoy your fish, shrimps and snails!

Mobiles are way too complicated for me, although I do have one now. Wink

I tend to go with Eheim, although i do have an AquaOne heater in one tank ( only because it came with it and my spare doesn't fit! )
