Hi all
i'm a newbie, just got a 125ltr tank and Ihave 20 small fish in. Neons, Tetras and some Guppies. It is about 8 weeks old now and I'm noticing brown spots appearing on glass and gravel. I have cleaned it off twice but noticed it back again last night. Any advice would be much appreciated

Thanks
Daz

Hello D.

What you're seeing is diatomacious algae, aka Diatoms.

They build their outer shells using silicon. Soluble silicon compounds from new gravel commonly dissolve in tankwater, hence your Diatoms are having a bit of a fiesta! In time, with successive water-changes, the amount of dissolved silicon will diminish, and so will the Diatoms (unless the water you use for changes also has a high silicon loading, of course!).

It's certainly nothing to be concerned about : just wipe it away as you've been doing.

Welcome aboard, by the way - and sorry to have edited your first post. I've put the excess apostrophes back in their box!
Chocolate Gourami
False Eight-Banded Barbs
Liquorice Gourami
Phoenix Rasbora
Pseudomugil sp. "iriani" Rainbows
Sakura Shrimp
Sparkling Gourami
Spotted Blue-Eye Rainbows
Food : anything that appears in an outside bath, plus: blackworms, daphnia, earthworms, microworms, moina, waterlouse
