Ghost shrimp - can they eat fish?
#1
As on my tank log thread, I bought a single shrimp labelled "algae shrimp" for 75p at an LFS, approximately one inch. They main guy wasn't there and the person who served me didn't know what type they were. I assumed Amano as it looked (to my very untrained eye) like the pictures of Amano shrimp I've seen before. But it seems it might actually be a ghost shrimp. It does look like the pictures I've seen online.

Here he is: https://youtu.be/O47wVhoU1Kk

I've been reading horror stories about ghost shrimp sometimes killing and eating sleeping fish. I have neon tetras and small flame tetras as my smallest fish. No fry though. Other people seem to say that they only take ill/dying/dead fish.

Any experience or advice on what to do would be gratefully received!

Looks like a ghost shrimp to me, not amano.

They will eat fry and sleeping fish, most healthy fish can escape them though. They don't normally live long lives and for the most part are used as feeder shrimp.

Seems some people have experience of ghosties eating their fish alive. Others never experienced this so maybe it's down to the shrimp.

Ghost shrimp do take resting fish, but I don't think that's a ghost as it doesn't appear to have the large pincers.

Thanks all. I spoke to the main guy, it was ordered as a River Shrimp apparently? Is that the same as a ghost shrimp? Either way he's happy to take it back so off it goes... No more assumptions when it comes to buying things!
