Hi plankton,

Absolutely right - precious little would happen with 'straight' RO. It is necessary to remineralize first before the bacteria can get to work. Having said that, it's carbon that nitrifying bacteria extract from carbonates/bicarbonates and they can get that from dissolved CO2 instead.
