Has anyone got something that would visually show me how much e.g 1kg of lava rock looks like? Or, say 5kg (I'm thinking thats how much to get )
There are pictures online, but there's nothing to compare them against. E.g how big against a ruler.. or some everyday item, rather than a blank background with no scale
While I could just go to the store... if anyone has something then I can get my online order probably cheaper
I'd hazard a guess that this is more like 1.25kg as it's half of a 2.5kg box of BBQ lava rock I sometimes use in my tanks. Tank behind is 25l and a 30cm ruler. If you want small bits, the BBQ boxes are great value. 2.5kg costs £5 rather than hobby prices.
Lava rock is surprisingly light for the size of pieces.
Here is a photo from my Roma 240 taken back in 2016.
I actually bought almost a box full of brown lava rock for less than £5 from a LFS.
They sold all rocks by the weight and lava rock being very light, I had almost a box full.
I took the pieces and made structures by sticking them together using brown HA6 sealant (HA6 is aquarium safe).
A tube of HA6 sealant costs about £5.00-£6.00.
Here's a close up photo also taken back in 2016. You can make out the sealant which blends in quite well.
