@Stephen is the best to advice on that one. Maybe a Pro 4 600?

Can you use the wave maker to push water through the filter?

They seem to be a lot less powerful than the FX or is that just dodgy marketing from Fluval?

I'd buy a new FX and keep the other for spares.

From experience with both fluval and eheim, eheim seem to be more accurate with the flow rate and fluval was miles off.
No idea with the bigger filters though.

A fairly well stocked 340L aquarium then the Eheim Pro4 600 should be sufficient.
Eheim state for aquariums of around 240L but up to 600L.
To me it is not only the efficiency of the pump or the advertised flow-rate that is important but also the amount of quality biological media that the filter can hold for beneficial bacteria colonisation.
When comparing the Eheim Pro4 600 with other external filters then the Eheim Pro4 600 wins by the amount of quality media it holds.
The advertised flow-rate of the Eheim Pro4 600 is more accurate with the flow-rate than most other brands, as @fr499y states.
If you intend to have a "community" aquarium with say tetra, barbs, cory etc.. then you won't need a filter that will make the aquarium a washing machine but something with a more gentle flow.
If you intend to have a well-stocked aquarium with say African Rift lake cichlids then a filter with a higher flow-rate maybe the way to go.
I personally prefer my 2 x Eheim Pro 600s on my 550L aquarium due to the quality (German engineering) and the amount of biological media they hold.
Both the Eheim Pro external filters and the Fluval FX external filters are good.
All the best

Thanks for that info. I am very tempted with the Eheim although another FX would mean at least I could leave my pipe work in place.
If I were to stick with the Fluval, then I might be tempted to upgrade to the FX6. Good idea or too powerful for my set up?
I have a feeling that the choice may come down to what ever is in stock.

The Fluval FX4 is more than adequate for your aquarium.
If it's the FX4 that's broken then maybe get another FX4 as it just means swapping the motorhead, everything else is the same.
When the broken FX4 is replaced under warranty then you'll have a spare to fall back on.
If you ever upgrade the aquarium to something far bigger then you'll already have 2 x FX4s for filtration.
The FX4 is what you're used to so it would make sense to buy another FX4.
I think a FX6 would be too much for a community aquarium; the FX6 is suitable for aquariums up to 1500L, the existing FX4 is suitable for aquariums up yo 1000L.
You'll make the right decision
