The only thing I've seen with water changes is that, if you do regular water changes of any size, at least weekly, then the fish appear to remain healthier.
If you don't do regular water changes, and then do a large water change there seems to be the prevalence of problems following the change. Whether that's due to some sort of "ph shock", temperature fluctuation, or not, I don't know.
If at first you don't succeed....
...get someone else to do it! :D
