High phosphate

Hi guys
I've checked my phosphate levels the other day for the first time in my tropical tank and they were at the top of the scale (1ppm I think). So I did a decent water change as suggested in many places. Then realised that my tap water have the same reading. Anyone have any experience in bringing phosphate down in such situations?

You can use PhosGuard or RowaPhos to remove phosphates, but usually isn't a big deal in a planted aquarium.

Phosphates are typically produced in a tank at about a tenth of the nitrates, so I would call 1ppm quite low.

I agree. Sounds fine for a fresh water tank. They're only really an issue in saltwater.

I have to dose phosphate and nitrate into my planted tank dont try and strip the phosphate out of the water as before you know it you will have algae as you upset the balance.

But you will also find references to high phosphate causing algal blooms. It's a bit of a minefield.
