I believe the Glass is the bracing, the wooden tip is (mostly) cosmetic.
Actually that's one minor thing I find annoying, you can only have half the top open at a time (presuming yours is the same as mine and has 2 sliding glass sections).
I've also siliconed 2 larger handles on to them to make it easier to slide them as the little rubber bobbles that were there weren't really good enough

Re: Wiggles tank
My lid is hinged but in a sort of 70/30 split so with the shelf above it I have to slide it forwards and flip it up or it just falls down (did that once and nearly took my head off)
And yeah the glass can only be opened on one side at a time and had no handle at all so just two flat pieces of glass so very hard to slide. Hence my idea for acrylic being much lighter.
I can't change the lid arrangement until I get LED lights anyway because of the heat and lack of direction of the light from the tubes.

Re: Wiggles tank
ah yes, The wooden top is also about a 70/30 split on mine but stays open nicely.
Ahhh you mentioned a shelf?
I have a shelf as well but it doesn't interfere with opening so it just stays in an upright position

Re: Wiggles tank

It's going well, all fish doing good. Still haven't got around to buying more plants yet as not wanting to spend to much at the moment with being off work on furloug...
Been testing with some wave makers and they definitely help stop so much stuff landing on the bottom (a bit of a problem with such a deep tank) but not sure the fish like them much, think I need some smaller ones.
