So unfortunately I've yet again found one of the residents with his head stuck in the plastic shield.

Sadly on this occasion the Oto in question was lifeless

I do like these heaters as they have the protection but they're certainly not suitable it appears for smaller fish

Bad design it seems. Sorry for your loss.

Just bought a jbl pro temp. Really pleased with it. Comes with a gaurd and you can set it to half degrees which is nice 👍

Bummer!

Can you take the guard off? Its not as if you have any massively boisterous fish in there that might break the heater.

I used to use the Fluval "E" heaters, good heaters.
I bought a Tropical Reef "Hydro-therm" heater for my temporary holding tank, comes in 50W (£12.95), 100W (£14.95), 200W (£16.95) & 300W (£18.95), good heaters with good heater guards.

Sorry for your loss. :(
It can be hit-and-miss with otos, mine used to graze happily on the heater guard(s), but they were bought separately, not part of the heater.

so nipped down my local Maidenhead aquatics and picked up a JPL Pro Temp 100w (price matched at Johns suggestion to Amazon). Does have a guard but unlike my original heater (put away as a spare) this is removeable.

I may accidentally have bought something else as well ;o)
