Made use of the uv bulb from the old unit to take advantage of the low flow.
So I have tried to make a sump for my tank

A question, would it be cruel to keep a betta in this? It's a 30 litre bucket. I felt like it might be a nice home for one. Nice and quiet with some greenery in there. would be like it's own little space.

Not with the UV. I believe it affects the eyes as they don't have eyelids.
Plus they jump.

They do need a tank with a lid, especially if you're paying £25 for one.......there are a lot of youtube vids with them jumping.
