Know where the source is - try to find a local breeder who doesn't use a med bath for spawning and raising fry.

See how it goes, I've put an ad out looking for breeders see why it comes back with, two of my older male Bolivians should be going to a good home during the week so it may take the sting out of things a bit.

Really in two minds about switching to Warmer water/blue rams, would it rule out getting a BN pleco with the higher temp?

Not particularly, they seem to be able to cope with warmer water, around 26C/27C.

That's encouraging that the BN can do ok in those kind of temps.

Just tested my water for nitrates before my weekly water change there and they were coming somewhere in the range of 20-40ppm there I think they're the blues are best avoided for me just now.

Doing shift work probably won't help with the water change routine either to be fair.

Thanks for the input folks super helpful as always!

If your tap water is low in nitrates you just need to do bigger water changes. :)

Gonna thin the stocking out a bit and give it a go, think half my trouble is that I have too many bottom-dwellers and overfeed to overcompensate.

Will spend a while tinkering with water change volumes etc see if I can steady it. I'd imagine I'll need to gradually up the temp any by a wee half degree here and there till it's up to where it needs to be.

Its a challenge but i'll give it a go. If it doesn't work out can always look at something different like apistos or red breast acara.
