So had oscars a few months can’t be more than 6m old and only 4in at best. Lately a few have been hiding behind some decorations and laying on sides doing a bit of tail fluttering. Now what I’ve been reading is to say that’s spawning nature but they aren’t mature enough for that. They have a few spats and seem to be chasing one individual in particular and fluttering near that. Are they just being horny teenagers here or bullying.

How many Oscar's and how big is the tank. I'm guessing but I'd have thought a 4 inch oscar is big enough to breed. Have 2 paired up?

I had angel fish spawn at about 2.25 inches.
64l kitchen tank: 16 golden tetra.
5ft 425L: 3 blue angel fish, 30 rummie nose tetra, 20 black neon tetra, 1 longfin bristlenose plec, 2 corydoras sterbai, 24 corydoras duplicareas,2 SAE.

In less than a year, my two Oscars reached 8”. I would of expected yours to be a fair bit bigger than they are. What are you feeding them and what size tank are they in?

Oscars reach sexual maturity at about 9-10”. They can get there at about 10 months old. It takes them 2 months to get to an inch. After that they’ll grow an inch a month with plenty of food, space and water changes.

Lying on their side is sulking. Either something’s not right with the tank or they’ve eaten too much or it’s disagreeing with them.

I have 6 at the minute in a 5 ft but plans are going ahead to moving to a 7/8ft we haven’t decided yet. They could have been younger than what I said only 2inch when I got them now about 4 so no where near mature. They get more than enough a mixture of flake and sinking pellets with crushed peas maybe twice a week all seem to be happy apart from last week but they do seem to be chasing just the one always giving it a dig. Then that goes into the naughty corner and a few others follow and do the tail shakes at it.

I'd bet they are sorting out a pecking order. I wouldn't keep more than a pair in a 8ft tank! I've seen them close to 18" and heard of them reaching 20's in monster tanks.

Now I know they’re not eating much, because Oscars don’t really eat flake, full stop. If you switch them to whitefish, prawns (the little ones), frozen etc they’ll eat a lot more and grow a lot quicker.

If two of them pair up at maturity they won’t tolerate any others even in an 8ft. Till then they’ll be fine.

Yup! I used to feed mine on Hikari Chiclid Gold and Cichlid Staple which they loved and really piled on the pounds with it!

They eat the flake like there is no tomorrow doesn’t last 2 minutes plus some sinking pellets. I must have got them at very young as they are around 4 inch so hopefully just sorting out pecking order. Going to pull 2 out but them in the 100l for the meantime till get a bigger tank or can rehome as may be getting yet another big tank.
