While I am waiting for my tank to cycle I am obviously looking at stocking, idea always was a shoal of 8-10 Tetra and then a few groups of bigger fish. But the more I see tetras and see the different shapes and sizes seeing a few different breeds shoaling in the same tank would look pretty awesome... Or do they just get in each others way?

Small tetra such as Neon tetra look better in larger groups.
Add another tetra of a different shape, colour & size and it can look good.
6 should be minimum quantity of one tetra species, more looks better and often shows better natural behaviour.

All the best

I will definitely have the cardinals but like the Congo and Serpae different colours and sizes. I can see why people don't just end up with one tank lol.

The tank that started me in this hobby has 8 species in it. A 2 of one species 4 of another 1 or something else and so on. Knowing what I do now I really dont like the stock of the tank. I'd like to get rid of them all but Zarra wont have it.

My big 5 ft tank has 3 species in it. 1 long fin bristle nose pleco, 2 platinum angel fish and 46 rummie nose tetra. I'm obsessed with watching the rummies. The way they shoal along the length of the tank has got better as I've added more. (Started with 10)
64l kitchen tank: 16 golden tetra.
5ft 425L: 3 blue angel fish, 30 rummie nose tetra, 20 black neon tetra, 1 longfin bristlenose plec, 2 corydoras sterbai, 24 corydoras duplicareas,2 SAE.

The bigger the group of one species, the more natural the behaviour. I like a mix but try to get larger groups of at least 10.

Years ago I had lemon tetra, black phantom and red phantom tetra. They did look pretty awesome mixed up. Now I’d love a large group of harlequin rasbora.

Large groups are impressive and act more naturally as above.
If you have more than one, then go for a torpedo shape and a wide-bodied for variety. I wouldn't go with more than two species though.

I once had a small tank where I had neons, black neons and glowlight tetras (6 of each). I thought it would look amazing but actually they didn’t shoal together and it wasn’t that great. A big group of just one of any of those would have been better.
