It will still filter but you will have removed the bacteria/muncher colonies that deal with ammonia and nitrite (both toxic), causing your tank to go into a new cycle, so these colonies will be rebuilding, but cycling can tank 6weeks+ for the munchers to establish themselves.
Best thing to do in this case is (as blackghost said) test kit and check the tank water, then you may have to do daily water changes until the filter catches back up. During this process i would recommend using seachem prime as a water conditioner for its detoxifying properties, it converts ammonia and nitrite into non toxic forms that are still consumed by the muncher colonies.
Hope that makes sense :)

I’ve tested for ammonia (0.25ppm)and nitrite was 0ppm, nitrate was very high though around 80ppm!

I’ve ordered the seacham prime and stability off amazon anyway

Daily water changes anyway.
Coldwater tanks cycle very slowly in comparison to tropicals.
I've always moved media from one filter to the nest, even if having to cut it to make it fit.
One of my filters is made up of lots of cut pieces. :)

I guess I’ve just been naive in thinking I could just pop the new filter in and bingo!

He’s still not well, still in the corner by the filter not moving much, ordered the stuff to treat the water
I’m almost certain it’s ammonia poisoning now, just hope it’s not too late!

Have looked at him again and he’s definitely got red in in all his fins and he won’t move from the filter wonder if it’s because of oxygen because he does actually move it’s only to get air from top of the tank and then he goes straight back to the bottom corner near the filter

I’ve replied to your message. Sadly I do think this will be the end result of 20 years tap water. But the fact he’s lived this long without dechlorinator says a lot about the hardiness of the common goldfish!
240L: 6 cherry barbs, 2 honey gourami,
6 Otocinclus, 11 sterbai Cory, 6 standard rummynose, 4 golden rummynose tetra. But don’t quote me on that given how things are going!

57L: Ghost (Betta) & Pumpkin (nerite)

Parameters: gH2, kH1, pH7.6 (tap).
Fish fiend since October 2017.
