Hello all.

I'm considering adding some gold or rosy-gold barbs to my 500+ litre tank. It's currently running around 26.5c. I'm wondering if the barbs would be ok at this temp? Has anyone ever tried it? Google seems to have a mix of suggestions about maximum temps for them ranging from 23c to 28c.

Any experience appreciated.

Thanks,

Si

Just need to be clear which barb you are talking about.

When I put in rosy-gold barb, this one came up:

These need cooler tanks, around 20-22C.

Interesting. Some I've seen in shops have been labelled rosy-gold. Essentially gold/ yellow with a red/ pink hue as well. Almost half and half in colour. Looks like they were just gold ones from what I've found as some do seem to get the redder colour too. Good to know the rosy ones are lower temps.

Guess I'll be hunting some nice gold ones down!

Thanks all :)

Barbs generally require cooler temperatures.
Rosy Barb (Pethia conchonius) for example are best at 16-24C (20C would be mid-range).

Other fish that would be fine with the warmer temperature could include Bentos Tetra (Hyphessobrycon bentosi), Rosy Tetra (Hyphessobrycon rosaceus) to give just two examples.

Hope it helps

Thanks Stephen.

I'm really after something bright and yellow ideally. I've got honey gouramis at the moment, but historically gouramis just don't seem to flourish in my tank/ water.

Trying to find something active and bright coloured to replace them.

The information above on the Golden barb (Barbodes semifasciolatus) in respect of tank water temperature is not correct.
Barbs generally prefer cooler temperatures and the Golden barb is not an exception, 16-25C is the range so better at around 19-22C long-term.
