Box of Bio Balls

Post by Jon_D »

Free to anyone who wants them.  No postage or anything, I just want the space in my cupboard.  Consider this an early Christmas Prezzie from me.  I ordered them thinking they were the little things you pop into your filter.  Anyway, another lesson learned for this newbie!  Image

Yes, same here - I thought you'd use them to increase surface areas for bacteria to grow on?

Yep, they are to increase suface area for bacteria, but these are too big to go into my filters; 1 inch diameter each. Not a lot on YouTube for these particular ones either.

They do go in the (external) filter, to trap good bacteria, but they are pretty rubbish! Sintered glass or the various cast sand/clay media like Biohome Ultimate are much better, but expensive.
I think you wanted them there bio balls that slowly dissolve inside the filter & tank, to build up good bacteria: I got a bag of 'Gel filter balls' when I ordered Biohome Ultimate from Pro Filter, they seed the new media and promote good bacteria growth, they are available in tubs of 100

Plastics have been used for years, and are a good media if used correctly :)
