I think that’s very reasonable, would have paid a company a ton more...plus you’ve enjoyed the whole thing, planning, designing, stocking etc, all your own hard work and will see it mature !

With all the rain we have had this last weekend, has your overflow worked as well as it should? And did all the excess water go where it was meant to go?

Yes, happily it all seems to have worked :-)
My water harvesting system has been overflowing though!

No substantial new life in the pond yet, though the population of invertebrates seems to be increasing.

Hopefully the plants will take off in the spring.

That's good to hear. And good, too, that you have wildlife colonies in your pond already :D

I'd start searching for frog spawn around now, you just simply scoop up some in a bucket and drop it into your pond, then the frogs will return and lay their spawn every year: they usually return to their birthplace :)
I'm not sure on the laws regarding toads and newts though, I used to have breeding newts in my allotment pond but that was many years ago.

I may have to to steal your guttering redirecting idea. My overflow is working well, but increased (labour free) water changes won’t do my fish any harm.

Interesting to see your budget. I did all mine on the cheap (standard).

Hole digging- free
Liner £50
Used filter and pump £70 (I think)
Stones (free from Facebook ads, just had to collect)
Fish £2.50 each (plus a couple rehomed from a small bucket!)
Plants donated from family member.
Pipe for drain and connector about £10
All-in mine was sub £200 inc fish.

I wasn’t quite as concerned about making everything fit in (fancy stones) with the surrounding not garden like you, so it gave me more budget options I suppose. Just thought I’d add this so people can see options and prices.

Having updated my other two threads, I thought I had better not forget the pond. Here’s the view from the living room window. It’s raining!

I have come to the conclusion over the years that all fish have a serious drink problem!
