Don’t think Pearl is with us anymore. The fish were quite active yesterday as it was a bit warmer. I put a bit of flake on the top to try to tempt her out. No sign. Sad times. At least I got the net on before the other vanished too!

Looking at the positives that no more were taken. Still my first year of pond-life, so at least I know netting is essential. Live and learn.

Thanks for the comments

Looks like I went ice fishing today! But I didn't. I took the netting off as for the first time the fish looked like they may be trying to hibernate (or whatever they do). The pump at the bottom of the pond was just taking the warm water and pumping it down the snowy waterfall. It was a challenge, but I’ve managed to lift the pump up onto a higher shelf so it’ll only take water from the top 12”. Even kept most of my freezing finger tips! Not sure if I should turn the pump off all together or if that’ll cause more issues with freezing due to no water movement.

One thing I did see it what looked like a massive tadpole. Never seen any frogs so this I can only assume was a baby goldfish! Only got a glimpse as it swam over some light coloured sand/ gravel, but deffo some new life in there. I did release a lot of tiny goldfish fry into the main pond, but thought with little cover they’d get scoffed. Lots of plant roots and moss growing in there now so a fair bit of cover. I’ll be super pleased if I get baby fish survivor until the summer!

That’s all from pond land for now.

I used to stick a couple of plastic balls in the top of our pond to stop it freezing during winter. Never understood why people turn pumps off over winter.
