If you are thinking about adding fish be mindful of cats and herrings. My aunt in Denmark has a pond in her garden and they've lost quite a few to herrings, they are experts at spotting garden ponds and seem to know that they usually mean an easy lunch!
Meet the pond...

Looks great!
It would suit a few goldfish but would need a filter as you suggest.
For a wildlife pond it’s better not to have a filter, but you will need a place for creatures (amphibians, insects etc) to get in and out, so a sloping area both sides of the wall or maybe some branches resting on the edge.
Generally sticklebacks are not compatible with amphibians - they eat tadpoles so amphibians tend not to lay eggs where there are fish.

Sorry...I assume its Herons, they are indeed a bloody pest, you may need to cover the water with netting
If you want frogs, you need to add spawn to the pond, as mature frogs always return to their 'home' to breed, but do add escape ramps for hedgehogs, and also the frogs, maybe a floating island for resting on

Thanks! This all came about because I went for my (non illegal - necessity driven) trip to fish shop for dechlorinator. We got chatting, I was very easily talked into a filter. Then I spied a gorgeous new shipment of pond plants!! Well I can’t go to the garden centre.
Next day I wanted more plants, but they are non essiential. BUT FISH MEDICATION ISN’T . Back I went!
Now in two weeks time the new goldfish they have in quarantine will be ready to go. Hoping I need fish food by then
