I would have liked to have replied to the author of the article that “counting” as defined by humans, consists of giving a verbal name to a numeral. The basic manner of counting is simply seeing that “this” is larger or smaller than “that”. A tribe of Aboriginals in Central Malaya used a base of 7. They used the left hand fingers to signify up to 5, and then the left elbow for 6 and the shoulder for 7. Then they moved to their right hand and arm. The highest they could contemplate was 14 in our terms. After that if asked what came next they merely said “many”. Much of their communication is non-verbal and visual as noise in the jungle would scare their prey

It has been proved that birds do not count, but they do recognize number patterns. Humans use numbers and patterns in combination.
When you count your fish in a shoal, it would be very difficult to count as 1,2,3,4,etc. but we can count quicker using number groups viz: .
