Hi folks, bit of advice please.. so I’ve fishless cycled my tank (100 litres) and it’s getting rid of 2ppm of ammonia within 24 hours, what I’d like to have are 2 decent size Oranda (13cm approx) would the tank be able to cope with waste? Thanks in advance

Hi @markyd215 welcome to the forum :D

Unfortunately 100l tank is not going to be sufficient for 2 Oranda Goldfish permanently. They tend to grow to between 20 to 30cm (8 - 12 inches). The recommended minimum tank size is 120cm (I think this would possibly allow for more than 2?). Some would argue even then that this isn't ideal.

They have a huge bio load (very messy fish) meaning your tank also needs to be heavily/over filtered. This also means they may require extra water changes and tank cleaning to keep the water quality good.

Hopefully someone with more experience will be along to correct/confirm or add to what I have said :)

So much conflicting information on line, I read 25l per orananda was about right, I was think of getting a couple of Oranda and then getting an external filter on the go as well..?

Yes there is an awful lot of conflicting info when it comes to fish. 25l per fancy goldfish is definitely way to small. The problem is they can get pretty big and chunky. They aren't particularly strong swimmers, so do need enough room to manoeuvre and not get in each others way when they reach full size.

As I said they are very messy and cause an awful lot of waste in your tank as well. So from this point of view, the bigger volume of water you have, the better it can cope. Over filtering is additionally required to cope with their waste as well.

I have never kept Goldfish but read up about them as I was considering some at one point. I found a lot of the information on them very confusing. So many different opinions and recommendations regarding requirements. I decided not to get them.

I am sure their are some people on the forum who have, or have had Goldfish who will be able to give you more advice when they pop on the forum :)

Welcome to the forum. :)
120l is the minimum for one fancy goldie, then 25l - 30l for each extra one, it isn't just 25l per fish. ;)
