Hello all

Well to my shock... today I find 3 extra amano shrimp🦐 (juniors size)...
I'm pretty sure there was 100s of post📑 that said they don't breed in fresh water...
So where did they come from!

While I'm happy to see them... I can't help but wonder...
Will I end up with a population explosion💥...

On the funny side they are tough🦾...
Putting in algae waffle and watching them pushing the fish back as they try to reach the waffle is like watching a gang get beating up by one guy...😆😆😆

Take pictures! Amano don’t breed in fresh. Could well be a river/ghost shrimp and not an amano or even a Malaysian river shrimp. There are a few others that can look the same, but stay a bit smaller and will breed in freshwater.

2nd this. Amanos do get burried (I think that's the right word for egg layden) but the eggs can't hatch in anything but brackish conditions.

While it's a general rule of thumb that they won't, it's not impossible for eggs to hatch and for zoes to survive in apparently-unfavourable conditions.

I transferred two home-grown ones from my Rio 180 to my Rio 400/450, both containing soft water, some years ago. At least one is still knocking about - next time I see either or both I'll try to take a pic.

My #1 LFS, before its incineration, wasn't surprised by my excited news at the time - while rare, it wasn't an unknown occurrence for them (though they kept them in hard water) apparently.

In theory, though, they do need salt water in their life-cycle to breed reliably.

I thought Ghost Shrimp were much clearer with a bluish tone with hardly any markings compared to Ammano?
