My 2 albinos are over 2yrs old and seem healthy apart from they constantly appear to have damaged barbells. My 4 bronze are about a year old and their barbells are lovely and long. I have play sand as the substrate and keep it as clean as I can. I have noticed the albino really shove their heads into it rummaging about. Is there anything I can do to help them from damaging their barbells? I do notice they grow, but just get damaged again.

A little Melafix now and then, won’t stop the damage but will aid the healing process. Others may know more.

Thanks Annie. I do hate seeing them with stumpy barbells. Will give the Melafix a go. Hopefully it will at least help them  :)

I have seen quite a few pictures of others cory on the forum lately all looking like my bronze. Nice long barbs. ATM one of albino has a longish Barb and the other damaged and very short. Would love to fix it for them, but given the substrate I already have and the fact it isn't affecting all of them I am at a loss.

Scratch that. I just went to feed them and the other barbell is broken off :( So they just had 50% water change and clean on Friday, but I have emptied out 4 buckets of water giving the sand another hoover before feeding them.

I will get some Melafix ordered from Amazon. Was wondering is there any reason I shouldn't just order the Melafix for ponds? This would go a lot further.

I've noticed for what reason albinos are more sensitive for barbell loss and finloss.
Think about adding leaflitter

Thanks for the reply DD. I'm not that familiar with leaflitter. What would you suggest? I mean I'm guessing obviously leaves  ROFL

Hi Vess. I hadn't tested my ph for a little while, so I've just done it with my API liquid test kit. When I did just the normal ph test I thought it might have been hitting 7.6, so to check I did the high ph test and it showed what looked a lot more like 7.4

Are you suggesting that the ph may have an effect on barbels Lee?
I've always thought that it's down to substrate, but this would be a real eye-opener if it is something to consider....
