Hi, could someone please try and explain what I’m doing wrong?
A couple of weeks ago I bought 8 RCS, everything seemed ok at first, they were even moulting. Then every 2-3 days I’m finding a dead shrimp, I’m now down to 3 I think. I’ve been doing water changes every 3-4 days, normally about 20% but I did do 50% last time in an effort to try and stop them dying. Unfortunately this morning, another dead shrimp but also a moult. They don’t seem to be interested in the shrimp food but do scavenge around the tank.

Tank is a 30cm cube and has Fluval plant and shrimp stratum, 5 different plants including Java moss and fern, bog wood, 200lph internal filter producing good surface movement and there appears to be loads of tiny bubbles in the water, so I assume it’s well oxygenated. I used filter material, including Matrix from established tank in the new filter and most plants were taken from the established tank as well. Light is on 6 hours a day, mostly during daylight. I’ve not started dosing ferts yet as I wanted to make sure the shrimp were acclimated first.

The main question with CRS is, how soft is your water?

They look like CRS (crystal reds), RCS (red cherry), so the soft water shouldn't be a problem, but they will need a calcium supplement, I usually suggest the cheapest which is cuttlefish "bone" for budgies.
Break a piece off and boil it for a couple of minutes (it sinks then), and when that's depleted you have loads more to break off. It last for ages..... ;) :)

Oops my bad, missed that in the previous post. As @plankton says, calcium suppliment will be needed and is usually the answer to bad moults ( which causes deaths )

Not a problem, I some times struggle to see what’s right in front of me to.

I’ll get some cuttlefish today or tomorrow and hopefully that helps. Would egg shell work or is that too hard?

Some good news, I spotted 4 shrimp. So 1 more than I thought I had left.
I did two 50% water changes this evening as the water was a little cloudy. Cleaned the filter foam and Matrix in tank water. Replaced filter floss as it was caked in muck, no way it was from the shrimp, must have been from the Fluval Stratum substrate. It seems to be a very messy substate. Will get some cuttlefish bone tomorrow.

I take it that you are using RO water to reduce the hard Norwich water, is that correct ?
If yes then you are probably re-mineralising the water, which is a good thing.
Are you using CO2 ? RCS don't do well with CO2.
RCS do better at a tank water temperature of 25-27C, they don't normally breed at lower temperatures.

Hope it helps
