Re: Hi! New and confused

30C is the upper limit of fast growth. The cycle will go quicker at 27, plus 30 won't do the plants any good and will encourage more algae. I’m actually struggling to keep the temp at a constant but it’s never gone above 27.4. I’ve got a battery thermometer on the right, and a no fills thermometer ...

Re: Hi! New and confused

Algae are not caused by too much light. They grow when conditions are right for them and different algae need different conditions. Some grow when there's "not enough" light. It's pretty normal during a cycle. After the cycle the conditions will change, and the algae will probably change. ...

Re: Can you cycle a small tank (fish-in) in a week?

No, you shouldn't let the nitrites spike. They're damaging the fish. The nitrite -nitrate bacteria are doubling their numbers every day(ish) because there's excess nitrite available. Let it spike and they'll still only double every day, the fish are suffering more, and it'll take longer. Keep nitrit...

Re: Hi! New and confused

The base glass is raised so anything
soft like a mat and the frame might bed into it so that it pushes up on the glass, which you don't want. You can use polystyrene if the frame itself sits on it.

Re: Hi! New and confused

Four corners touching is all you need. Ignore the sides, that's just the frame, not the glass. The glass is held full length by the silicon and is cushioned by the frame. Just get the corners touching and leave it. Or put it on polystyrene or carpet or something to level it out?

That shop will kill your fish in no time. Please don't go back there. The online advice isn't much better.
Fish-in cycling is always harmful to the fish involved. It makes them suffer but not die, which some people are ok with, but isn't right.
Cycling is easy. Read the guide fr499y linked. :)
