Why unplug a heater? If the room temp is higher than the heater then it won’t kick in anyway.

The choice is yours. You could pick out the larger ones by hand and leave the rest to grow. Yes they can be left in until they decompose
Check hardness and ph as they do lower it slightly, the effects might be greater in softer water though!

ah yes oxford is pretty hard water. Very slow acclimatising when you get there as the hardness will be a shock. Be prepared to loose a few as well. The swordtails will love it though!
