How much air do you want to pump?
I have a £5 USB one from ebay that powers a small sponge filter under 20" of water just fine and it is silent, that is probably it's limit though.

Try to place them above the tank on something soft that will baffle any noise. That seems to make them quieter (even better if it's in cupboard or similar, but with an airflow).
You'll still need to use an anti-suckback valve.

What brand do you currently have? If it's a known noisy one, then you might have several options for quieter ones. Tetra Whisper are said to be quiet.Ukhammy2015 wrote: ↑Wed Aug 04, 2021 8:45 am Hi

ALL aquarium air pumps make noise due to their design.
Only one air pump brand was ever really silent and unfortunately no longer made.

I looked at a youtube teardown for the cheapy one I bought, instead of pistons it has a rotating disk with a bump on it. As the bump goes round it squeezes rubber bladders which in turn feed air through a non return valve.
Being cheap it isn't quite balanced properly so does make a slight noise if left on a shelf but a lot less than the Marina one I have, happily it comes with a caribina to hang it up with so can't be heard.
