I'd comment, but I'd have to ban myself.

you would think with the cost of Discus and if it comes to that the hobby in general, people would at least do a little research, some FB groups are ok, I've had some decent advice in the past but you do have to sift through the responses, far more times I have seen a newbie put down by well meaning but harsh experienced keepers, typically the newbie then gets upset and leaves the group I don't think this can help the fish, difficult to find a friendly group but one where this sort of thing would not be left. I still use it though

I'm only in a very select few fish groups on Facebook now, some of them were just people with big stocking/disease problems and a load of people guessing and giving bad advice, I'm no expert but I don't give advice unless I know I'm right.
I have friend with a 120L tank with a 10" pleco, teras and platies but won't listen there is any incompatibility because the well known chain of pet shops told him it's fine

Most of the people will keep asking over and over again until they find someone to tell them what they want to hearWiggles wrote: ↑Tue Jan 19, 2021 2:00 am I'm only in a very select few fish groups on Facebook now, some of them were just people with big stocking/disease problems and a load of people guessing and giving bad advice, I'm no expert but I don't give advice unless I know I'm right.

I’m afraid in this situation there comes a point where you have to look after yourself. Being repeatedly or continually angry about stuff you can’t change isn’t healthy. It (presumably) isn’t how you would choose to spend real life free time, so don’t subject yourself to it on the internet!

Have you been sent on “anger management” as well? (I was, which everyone found hilarious because they couldn’t believe i lost my rag)Wishafish wrote: ↑Tue Jan 19, 2021 7:14 am I’m afraid in this situation there comes a point where you have to look after yourself. To the tune of “the saints go marching in”:
Oh fluffy sheep! Oh fluffy sheep! Oh fluffy sheep are wonderful, they’re white Welsh and fluffy! Oh fluffy sheep are wonderful!

Or how they're surviving with the stress/aggression! - Whilst they're a cichlid and can easily give as good as they get (you find that out hand feeding beef heart and they miss....) there also very jumpy nervous fish who are constantly on guard! - With the wrong tank mates the damage they can do too themselves is a big a risk as them other fish to them!
On another note @Andys temperate tank I guess this solves what to do with you tank, get yourself 30 parrots, couple of blue dempseys - maybe even throw a couple of fahaka puffers in for good measure?
I dont have facebook either, but its getting harder and harder to note with more and more groups/forums/shops etc all just switching to facebook its almost like you miss out for not having it these days!

I'm on a few number of fb groups what with the archery and stuff, and the number of newbies asking reasonable questions and getting smart arse/ nasty replies is shocking. Also people , like Paul said, who just ignore advice until they get an answer that goes with what they are going to do anyway.

It seems to be a sad fact of life that fish are mistreated on a large scale. There is only so much control of the issue that can take place unfortunately.Wishafish wrote: ↑Tue Jan 19, 2021 7:14 am I’m afraid in this situation there comes a point where you have to look after yourself. Bloody hell! Poor fish
Good shout coming off the group, these people will never open their minds enough to take good advice.
Nearly 3 years in to fishkeeping and still consider myself a novice, that is until you see how ignorant and unwilling to learn some people on these groups are! I had to explain the difference between soft water and hard water to someone the other day.... The poor fish, I wish there was a way we could rescue them all
