Post by Moby »

Is it essential that the flow and return fit in same corner.Or can they be at the opposite ends of the tank.?

Opposite ends would be better in my opinion as this would create a better flow around the tank :)
I think it just depends if the pipes are long enough :D

Water flow is life in any aquarium and I agree with @Gingerlove05 one at each end of the tank is better to keep even circulation with the aquarium. I use to have the view that the strainer 'in' pipe should be the longest and furthest away from the pump head, relying on gravity to move the unfiltered water to the canister. The exit return pipe being shorter and therefore the pump has less work returning the filtered water to the aquarium.

I say 'use to' because my current set up the filter is housed in the middle cupboard, where as most cabinets are either one side or the other and both pipes are together on the left hand side of the aquarium but I do have two extra Eheim StreamON pumps located each side of the aquarium.

The Fluval instructions were very specific that the shorter hose should always be the suction side. I suspect it is to make sure there's always a positive pressure in the filter to prevent the pump running dry.
I think opposite ends is always better but most filters come with short hoses, my first thought would be to buy longer hoses but again many are so narrow that it would restrict flow badly.
It's a big reason I like Fluval as they use hoses with a larger internal diameter.

Eheim have the same view hose placement on their external filters these days.

Back in the early eighties the view was then to give the shortest hose to return pipe to the spray bar. Knowing what electric motors were like back then, they were no where near as powerful as the pumps made these days.

Perhaps I'm still using old fashioned ideas. :dodgy2:
