Apistos are ok on their own and it is generally easier to tell male and females apart.
Most distinguishing feature aside from fin colours, is the black leading (front) edge on the female ventrals, males tend to be colourless/bluey with yellow nearer the body. The body shapes are also a bit different, males have more of a forehead
Male gold variety, and female standard
Male standard colours (Good old Bubba!)
Female, very young standard colours
Male standard colours (Jayne, Bubba’s son, slightly exceptional because of the colour on the ventral fin)
Female standard colours

Thank you so much for the info Gingerlove05, and the cool photos! Based on that, I’d be happy with either a male or female (or possibly even a pair now!)
And after some thought I’ve decided to leave the pencilfish for now, and increase my Rummy school instead. That way I won’t have more than 5 varieties of fish.

I reckon you need at least 20 to bring the best out of them. I love my rummie shoal. Theres a few videos of them in my tank log. Dont want to add one here as its your tank log.

Lost yet another panda Cory. All seemed fine when I fed them at 5pm. By 9pm there was a carcass being scavenged by two Amano shrimp.
Definitely going to get a different type of Cory next time. Started with 12 and now only have 5.

I'm sure we've checked this before, but water params, temperature and feeding routine to see if there's anything obvious with the pandas?

Hi Plankton. No obvious signs of disease or infection. They have hikari sinking pellets (orange packet - designed for cories). Tank also gets bloodworm / daphnia twice a week instead of dry food (and a ‘starve’ day)
I would assume it’s the tank temperature (as all other parameters are fine). It was only until last year I realised the temp was too warm for them long term. I did reduce slightly but I think the damage has been done. Plus half the stock was from the LFS, where my Bolivian Rams perished with parasites, so I haven’t been too optimistic to begin with.

Yes, they don't do as well above 22C. That's what I keep mine at.
