They sometimes did ok, but often don't do amazing. Not sure what makes the difference. I had 5 initially and they were breeding lots so I'd be selling 30 every couple of months. I reduced this down to about 4/5 in total, lost a female and I'm not sure what started happening to the fry, but the 3 I have remaining are 1 adult male and x2 that were grown on, hut the only single fry I managed to find/ save from x2 spawns. I went from spawns of 30, to sometimes not even finding 1. I even moved the females to zebra land where theoretically there were no predators, but I still got zero or max 1 fry (despite lots of moss, plants and not having to tear females in breeder boxes).

They've done alright the last 2/3 years, but then weirdly just stopped doing well. I assume the rainbow fish ate the fry in the big tank. Not sure in zebra land? Too warm maybe.

I only have them as a family friend had a tank 2 miles up the road, just with sowrdtails and a lobster. They were the biggest, healthiest looking sword tails I've ever seen. Monsters! He gqve me a few to try. Can't remember if he adds stuff to the tank / substrate to harden the water or not.

Not sure if that ramble helped. They've done better than expected for a good few years. Now, I have x2 males and a fry, that's possibly male, so last of the line.

Happy wiggler Friday!!

I was sat in bed googling and started reading how is eggs go bad in caves, the male can start eating them until he eats the rotten one. Decided today was the day to get them out. I peeped in this morning and sure I saw a tail wiggles, so out the cave came.

Tipped it out and the babies came out pretty much straight away (not like with the zebras that held on tight!).

I've counted 19 in total. They're now in the hang on breeder box with a lot of shrimp and my 5 baby zebra plecos. Didn't manage to get the dad out the cave to check it was definitely empty, so I'm waiting for him to leave the cave (now back in the big tank). He's doing a combination of zipping in and out and more fanning. Sadly I think he's probably looking for his kids. I felt awful last time and same again this time, but better than looking for them in a rainbow fish stomach.

Here's a quick video of the little egg yolks with eyes and a tail. Think I got them out at the perfect time. Hope the zebra plecos don't scoff them. That's all for now. Happy wiggly Friday!

I could never tire of watching them or still be in awe of how they can scoot on a very full yolk sack. The wiggley tails are amusing to watch. Great news. Now the fun starts, microworms at the ready if they ever manage to consume that yolk

They're in the tank with the baby zebras and shrimp, so they get biofilm powder for the shrimp and a mix of microworms and micropellets for the zebs so theoretically I don't have to do much different if all goes to plan.

Nice kitten-tails. ;) :)
The reason the swordies aren't doing so well is probably long-term problems from the soft water, their osmotic systems will stop working properly.
If at first you don't succeed....
...get someone else to do it! :D

Enjoy your fish, shrimps and snails!

Underside of the tank Saturday morning, all bunched up.

Underside this morning. Definitely a few scooting around and sat on leaves, etc so maybe eating the biofilm on the oak leaves. They've regrouped throughout the day. All 19 accounted for this morning. :)
