So yesterday I cleaned out my canister filter, and.... I found a handful of baby shrimps! True survivors! The largest must've been there for months now! Talk about filter media, hahaha!

Not unusual, when years ago I was using a TetraTec 1200 canister filter, I always found young Neocaridina Shrimp inside the filter.
Only way to stop this happen is to add a intake filter, sponge or an air powered sponge filter.
Just have remember to clean it often to stop it slow your external filter flow rate.

Would an Aquarium Filter Guard help?
We have used these ourself, it replaces the plastic outlet cover on the filter pipe.
NACD OptiWhite Aquarium 140l,
F Zone Stainless Steel 15l filter,
Eheim powerLED+ fresh daylight,
Eheim powerLED+ fresh plants,
AI Nero 3 Powerhead,
Twinstar Nano Sterilizer,
Co2 Art PRO-SE.

They certainly do help. I wouldn't have shrimp in a tank without either a mesh inlet strainer or a sponge over the pipe.
