Heres some more pics. The small box is a gate valve for something. I'm assuming the 2 pumps is an intake and return. Cant wrap my head around the thing on the left with the water line and lid with water in.
I have a very small marine tank.

the square with the hole, water line and the lid is a skimmer. the smaller pump with the cone shape is the pump for the skimmer which should have a venturi to adjust the skim. The more air, the dryer the skim.

What is it skimming? Does it need cleaning regularly? The air pipe attached to the 2nd pump sticks out of the top but theres nothing to adjust it?
Is the gate valve for topping up the water in the skimmer section?
I really dont understand what it does or how it works.

It's a way to remove organic waste. Think of sea foam on the beaches, thats natures skimmer! I don't see a gate valve, maybe thats the flow adjuster for the skimmer to alter the height of the water going in/out

I'd never thought of that. Cheers ricrhys. I'll try and find the cost of a light now.
