2nd opinion on api ammonia test

Post by MasonJ19 »

I'm thinking it looks like 0ppm but went to my lfs yesterday about 13.00 and it showed about about 0.25 - 0.50 and he said it should take a week. My worry now is it looks 0 and I dont want to leave it at 0 for a week.

Do you know what test your LFS was using NH3 or NH4 saltwater? The API ammonia test gives a broad result of both.

Second, how long was it from when you took the sample to it being tested at the LFS?

They like to use the redsea ammonia test, I probably should have just bought some of that aswell it can be confusing using when your using 2 different brands.
It was probably about 30 mins from taking sample from my tank to getting to the shop and them getting round to testing it

If you have used mature live rock from another system, the chances are you are good to go.
The die off was most likely from bringing it back and the live rock dealing with anything else slapped into the tank.

I set mine up within days of the live rock going in and didn’t have any issues. Personally I’d take it as ready, and plonk in some CUC and see how they react.

You got live rock in there now?

If it was my aquarium, I'd do another waterchange and do another later in the week, then add a small number of clean up crew.

Yeah had some live rock in there for a week now I think. It made all the difference, literally the tested ammonia the next day and it had shot down. I could maybe do a big water change and then get a pair of clowns knowing they are pretty hardy and then next week or maybe week after get some clean up crew.

Clean up crew seem to be a little more sensitive, any recommendations on hardier clean up crew would be appreciated.

Just put a couple of Red-legged hermit (Paguristes cadenati) (make sure you get some spare shells for them) and some Turbo Snail (Astraea tecta)

I wouldn't put any fish in there just yet. :]

Sorted i got some bumblebee snails and a couple of clowns. I should say I wasn't just ignoring advice, I appreciate it. I was already at the shop and hadn't seen replies. Hopefully they will do well, the lfs confirmed there was no ammonia so figured it would be okay. Currently acclimating them!
