Taken sometime in the mid 50's (my parents have the originals, not sure how I ended up with this copy)

My Dad with "Grandma" Rose (his Grandmother Rosina Alice) and my Great Aunty Mae Mae (my Dads fathers sister Mabel Rosina) probably taken by my Grandad Fred (who I very very vaguely remember , he died when I was about 4 or 5)

@Stephen My grandfather was adopted. Would this make trying to do a family tree pointless?

Thanks :)

My mum was also adopted so for her I have two trees. Her adoptive family who she (and indeed myself and my siblings) grew up knowing about (again historically hailing from Somerset like my dad's side) and her birth family (who she found about in the mid to late 70's) who mostly hail from Yorkshire.

Interestingly her birth father (& mother)moved to the USA before she was born and was in The US Army (we believe) before she was born which technically under US tax regulations means we are supposed to fill in US tax forms!!

Not necessarily.
I am sure your grandfather has a birth certificate which would name his biological parents (just a thought ;))

My family tree can be traced back to 1540. There's even a village in Lancashire or Westmoreland, not sure which, which is the family seat. It's called Bigland.The name comes from old English Bigg which means cereal farmer. Some 60 years ago there was a family reunion in Tewkesbury in a hotel known as the house with 14 windows, Tudor House Hotel. The book John Halifax Gentleman was if I remember correctly based on this hotel.

Unfortunately it is on my fathers side and he cut ties with us when we were children, so getting hold of that info would be impossible I'm afraid :cry:

@Fishtales
Why impossible?
After around 1837 each birth had to be registered and a birth certificate issued.
You can get a copy from the register office, cost around £10-£12 for each copy.
What was your father's and grandfather's name and where born? (send me a PM if you wish)

All the best

The issue may be the same as with my Mum.

I've been unable to locate a Birth Certificate for her in her adoptive parents surname and I was only able to find her birth certificate using her birth parents surname as she knew it.
