Stocking Advice

Post by Chappers15 »

Hi so I set up my 54Litre (12 gallon) tank about 10 months ago, it’s cycled and is planted with 2 dwarf Sagittaria and a Cryptocoryne wendtii green. I was looking at getting:
. 10 ember tetras
. 6 otocinclus
. 4 shrimp (cherry, amano or blue velvet)

Is this ok? Would there be enough biofilm in the tank for both the otos and the shrimp? Also, is this understocked, overstocked or just right. If it’s understocked, what fish would you recommend adding or should I just add more tetras as they’re schooling fish?

Thanks

Hi and welcome to the forum.

What hardness is your water, is it soft, hard or somewhere in between ?
This will determine which fish to stock as some fish species need soft water and other fish species need hard water.
If unsure where do you live (town name only) as it can be looked up.

All the best
6 foot (550L) - Rio Nanay themed
9 x juvenile Biotodoma Cupido, 70 x Hyphessobrycon amandae, 15 x Corydoras agassizii (other fish will be added in the near future)

2 foot (120L) - Breeding tank
re-vamped, re-planted and getting ready

My water hardness is about 5dh which is ok for the tetras, otos and shrimp although apparently its not good for snails shells so I might have to stay clear of them

Welcome to the forum. :)
You can keep snails, but they'll need a calcium boost - the cheapest way of doing this is to get a cuttlefish "bone" for a budgie's cage and breaking off a piece, boiling it and dropping it in the tank.
It'll also help the shrimp. :)
This will supply for ages as you can just break off another piece when that runs out. ;)

Your water is similar to mine.

That sounds about right.
I would suggest a water temperature of around 23C (73F).

What ype of snail? Bladder snails seem to have no problem at all in my 6dGH 3dKH water.
