I have been making some effort to keep on top of the pond weed so I can actually see at least part way in, I have tried using surface plants for cover but all that happened then is the weed got taffled with the algae and I couldn't remove it, there was lots of frogspawn but not seen any tadpoles, not seen any baby newts either but it's a bit early for that, but I have been able to watch the adult newts, the males look quite impressive with their spots and frilly tails

Last week I had to dig up and dispose of a crab apple tree that I planted 2 years ago as I finally confirmed it has some kind of virus, to cheer myself up I made another pot pond, as clearly I don't have enough water to look after! I made the original last year and still really like it, the original now has some kind of fresh water copepod zooming around in it which is quite cool, I have managed to resist adding any kind of fish as it would be tricky to get a filter running out there, still it's a temptation sometimes, anyway here is pond - in - a - pot v2

Pond is looking very yellow at the moment, the snap dragon looking plant is near indestructible but at least it doesn't self seed, I think I might have overdone it with the grasses, the ones in the corner are looking a bit oversized, might have to reduce that a bit so I can actually fit water in, I did a top up today and removed the worst of the algae, it wasn't too bad actually, but then I made a mistake of leaving it in a little heap incase any critters needed to get out but next thing it's all over the place - the dog had found it - yuk! No critters left in it though.

I get a certain amount of blanket weed with my wildlife barrel and like you I use to leave on the side until I find our dog Charlie likes eating the stuff.

These days I get a half bucket of the pond water and rinse out return any critters, rather than leaving it. Also stops Charlie from having stringy poo dangling from his back end. :dodgy2:

pond pic from today, really pleased the 'fishing plant' with the pink bells has survived, also the yellow plant at the back is looking good, much better than last year, I think it likes the rain it's supposed to like damp conditions last year was a bit dry for it :)
