As @SPACKlick says, only when it disintegrates.
I have some sponges that are 22+ years old....... ;)
Changing it is to make the manufacturers money. The only stuff that needs changing is floss or polypads (whichever the filter uses), but even then I use it until it refuses to rinse out in the weekly water change and falls to bits instead. ;) :D

I have a fine floss pad at the very bottom of the sponge filters and it really does "polish" the water, love that term. !

So I haven't really been feeding my shrimp much directly but they have all grown and are coloured up nicely, is it just a case of blanching some carrot and dropping it in?

All fish are interested in anything that could be food.
Shrimp will need a little boost from time-to-time during the week, there are shrimp foods you can get. Use sparingly with only 4 shrimp at the moment though. ;)

Yeah they weren’t really interested in the carrot, just buzzed past it the Tetras were more interested.

No one told me how hard it was to get a sucky fish out of a bag, he nearly got vacuumed packed! Anyway he is in and going a bit crazy glass surfing snails into. Can snails leave the building as such lol?

OK some questions, 2 of my shrimp have molted, 2 eary clear skeletons on the substrate, is that a good sign? Tonight my Harleys seem to be hanging at the top of the tank, they aren't gulping more touching their nose against the water surface all 6 in formation. Ammonia, Nitrite and Nitrate are all 0 or minimal. My Garra goes through stages of being chill and then stages of glass surfing up and down one specific comer. Lastly assassin snails are ninjas, one minute all three hovering up algae the next GONE! Double lastly my shrimp seem to be loving hanging upside down on my surface plants... is that ok?
