Edit... I’d probably get 3 and keep one male. Or 2m,6f. I don’t like the idea of isolating fish. so I would stick to that 1:3+ ratio to be safe (I tend to go 1:6ish with livebearers, so none of the f’s are harassed by the m).
I wonder if they'd take one male back seeing as they were the last 2... and they're only ordering more for me!
Better still if anyone on here wanted a male and 3f for their own group I can get the fishlady to order 6f and split the cost
Would have to be near nn11 though

That said, what if after a couple of months I have the extra females from fry; isolated fish would no longer be lonely
I don't know how I can justify spending £42 extra on these with the OH when they were only £3.50 for 2!
They are very interesting fish though and I love being able to have "swordtails" in my tank without taking up the whole living room :)

Edit: I didn't mean separate in a tiny breeding box, I have a small tank which will shortly be free btw :)

Yeah they’ll soon up their own numbers.

2m/2-3f should be manageable then. They may even get on fine. You can play it by ear and sort out any harassment issues if the boys get too excited.

My ratios are just what I do because I like big tanks even for small fish, and I don’t usually have many species in one tank, so I’ve room for a few...

I went for it!

Ordered some pygmaeus from a breeder in Birmingham, they arrived today.
Paid for 6, got 8 but one was DOA

Here they are settling in to the fry tank ☺️

Eventually they'll go in something larger but they were a fairly pricey venture due to delivery so I will be keeping them separate until definitely too big for any other mouths!

The guy is also selling a breeding group of about 8 Xiphidums for £40 if anyone is interested I can point you the right direction

How big do you expect them to get, and what will you put them in with?
They do not get very big at all, barely 1.25"...... ;)

Well they are about 5-10mm currently but I do have an adult male already. I am thinking about what to do with the 40L guppy tank. I'm not sure if I will end up massively overstocked sticking them all in there together? So maybe I upgrade the tanks and have a 40L hospital/fry tank and something slightly bigger for the livebearers

Having posted recently in a wild livebearer group, someone suggested one of these will be male...

I don't see it... they are saying the colour indicates this one will develop the gonopodium but to me the body shape is wrong...
Any idea?
