Corys need a high protein (meaty) diet, they aren’t scavengers or algae eaters. They might eat some algae but its not great for them longterm.
Would it be a sign that they aren't getting enough food? I feed bug bites sickening pellets daily but then feed blood worms, cyclops and mosquito larvae about 2-3 times a week? But the bigger ones still snarffle around plants.

If my cory aren't resting they are either glass surfing or digging around.

I used to feed frozen every couple of days then I was advised to feed it everyday. All of my corys are in good health and always have been.

You need smooth things with bettas, because of their fins, so dragon and lava rock are not recommended.
He'll want broad-leaved plants to rest on.
Not sure about white sand for bettas, they tend to jump anyway and will be spooked easier with light coloured substrate.
