That’s when I noticed it. I turned the filter off to feed them, because the flow from the filter sometimes lifts the pellets out of the dish. Then while I was getting the pellets out of the tub I noticed they were swimming about. They tend to ignore the pellets but seem to get very excited about the micro worms. They seem to swim about really quickly, stop and maybe have a nibble on something and then whizz about again. There is plenty of biofilm and algae in there and there also those Copepods, so they shouldn’t get hungry between feedings.

I have just got a very good look at the interlopers and they definitely have pincers.

Is one bigger than the other (like a lobster)? If so then they are probably ghost which aren't the best shrimp with a community. I'm not sure whether they take other shrimp, but they certainly don't do resting fish much good......

No. They just have tiny little pincers like the CRS. Not Ghost shrimp then, that’s good if they don’t mix well with fish. They are a lot more timid than the CRS, rarely see them.

Any recommendations please for a quick growing plant that the shrimp will like, suitable for lowish light, dosing TNC Complete ferts and Flourish Excel liquid carbon.

It wasn’t that, I only started dosing ferts and Excel after they stopped dying, I wanted to make sure they were settled and acclimated before I tweaked anything. Thanks though.

It all seems to have settled now. I’ve had 3 moults today, I even caught one in the act. I don’t know how long it takes, but I saw it hunched over and realised something was up and then it gave a quick flick and the old shell flew off.

2nd really, really exciting thing today was this…….

I'm glad they appear to be thriving now, what did you change between the two batches?

You might have a Pavlov's dog situation where they know filter off = food, when it goes off they come out to grab food and when it's on they hide away digesting the food. If you feed them without switching off and spread the food around they might spend more time out foraging.
